It’s common to feel frustrated when marketing your company online. It doesn’t matter if you’re blogging, using social media, or sending out an email newsletter. If it doesn’t meet your expectations, you can feel like a failure.
But feeling like a failure is often simply a result of doing some key online marketing steps in the wrong order, or leaving out steps altogether.
Step 2 – Build Consistency
Anyone in sales, manufacturing, or any number of industries will tell you that the key to success is consistency. That’s what made a certain fast food burger chain so famous. While their quality is arguable, they’re nothing if not consistent.
You’ll need to understand that effective online marketing is largely writing. That can be obvious in some areas like blogging, social media updates and conversations, and creating email newsletters.
But even if you’re creating a video or overhauling your website, there’s a significant amount of writing involved.
So this step really involves writing consistently.
Write When the Mood Strikes
You probably have certain times you’re more in the mood to write than others. If that happens to you, make sure you take advantage of that mood!
Often, the energy it takes to get started on any given task is the biggest barrier. By starting when you’re already in the mood, you overcome that barrier.
Fortunately, most online marketing tools will let you write whenever you like, then schedule the publication for some point in the future. This means that social media, email newsletters, and even blogs can be written somewhat sporadically, on your own schedule, but then published on a more regular schedule.
Keep an Idea Log
If you’re like most people, you never know when inspiration will strike. It may be in the shower, during your drive to work, or in the middle of the night. The point is, you may not be in a position to actually write when you get an idea.
Simply keep an idea log in a notebook, on your smart phone, or in your tablet device. It should be a simple list of all the ideas you’ve come up with.
And don’t filter the list as you come up with the ideas. Just go back to the list when you’re needing an idea, and remove it when you use it. If something stays on your list for quite a while, you may decide to remove it.
It may be that you come up with a lot of details around one central idea. That’s great! You can start an outline of the article, series of social media updates, email newsletter, or even video script. You can even use a mind map, if that’s something you’re comfortable with.
Continue to come back to your outline over time. You can refine it, fill it in, and expand it until you feel like it’s ready to implement.
Then when it’s time to actually write, you’ll have the structure in place, ready to be filled in.
Of course, you may be excited and raring to get started. One way to ensure you stay consistent on multiple platforms is to actually pay someone else to do it for you.
Depending on your organization, it may make sense to hire an outside company like T&S. Or you may decide that you need someone in house. Whatever the case, someone’s much more likely to be consistent for you if you’re paying them to do so.
So for the first few months of your online marketing, concentrate on nothing more than being consistent in your writing and communication.
