A one-page website without WordPress

A website without WordPress? Sounds like heresy! We’re huge fans of WordPress here at T&S, but even we know it isn’t always the answer.

The other day, I got a phone call from a client of ours. Among other things, he’s an author. He was working on a collaborative project that required an author website he could link to.

Now being an author permeates all his other areas of expertise, but it didn’t really make sense for him to invest in a full blown, multi-page website like we’d helped him with elsewhere. So he sought my advice on what to do.

Fortunately, I’m a huge web nerd, so I had run across something that I thought would be a good fit: about.me.

Using about.me, you can create a simple, single-page website about you as an individual. That includes:

  • A short bio
  • A single link you can spotlight
  • A photo of yourself
  • Your location
  • Your interests
  • Your occupation
  • Your education
  • Contact info
  • Your social media links

Perhaps best of all, your can get all that for free! Naturally, you can pay a little something—$79 per year as of this writing—to customize your own domain name instead of using something like about.me/timjpriebe. But if you have your own domain through GoDaddy, you can actually get around that with domain name masking and pay far less.

But if you really like the service, I recommend paying for it. That will get you your own domain, remove all the about.me branding, and give you customer support you wouldn’t have had access to otherwise.

If you want to see one example, check out about.me/timjpriebe.
